Ledir Launches Ethiopia's First Community-First Microinsurance Platform
ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA — Ledir Technologies Ltd. today announced the launch of its groundbreaking microinsurance platform specifically designed for Ethiopia's 500,000+ Edir and Equb community savings groups.
The platform offers eight distinct insurance products — including life, health, agricultural, property, and group savings protection — with premiums designed to be accessible for Ethiopian families, making professional insurance available to millions who have historically been excluded from formal financial protection.
"For generations, Ethiopians have relied on the Edir system — a community mutual aid network rooted in our culture," said the Ledir CEO. "We are not replacing Edir. We are amplifying it, giving community groups the financial backbone of world-class insurance while preserving the spirit of collective care that defines our society."
Ethiopia currently has one of the lowest insurance penetration rates in Africa, at only 0.32% of the population. Ledir aims to change this by combining mobile-first technology, bilingual customer service in Amharic and English, and partnerships with established underwriters to deliver a trusted, compliant, and affordable product.
“Ethiopia's insurance gap is not a product problem — it is an access problem. Ledir solves access.”
